Understand: A concept statement is a goal defining what the designer wishes to achieve within the environment (in compliance with the client)
Step 1: Define the goal
Describe the space visually with descriptive, atmospheric wording. Paint a picture for your client.
Step 2: Identify the issues and concerns that require attention from the designer
Explain the function of the space
Do:
Write 3-5 sentences.
Be professional.
Use proper grammar, spelling, and punctuation.
Don't:
Include more than 200 words.
Use pronouns such as: "I", "we", "he", "she", "they", "you", and "us"
Provide design solutions - we aren't addressing what is being fixed, we are addressing how it is being fixed
Use conditional wording (example: "might", "could", "should") - it is important to sound confident and to be confident so that your client feels the same way
Think: What are the issues you are trying to address? Dig in deep and really consider what needs to be in this statement and what can be eliminated. Choose your words wisely.
How formal is your space?
Focal points - physical or visual?
What kind of emotion does this space evoke?
How does everything flow? What are you doing to create an ease of movement throughout the space?
Secondary uses: If your guest is usually alone, but will have guests over occasionally: How does your design reflect that change?
Image/Branding: What kind of message does this design send to those who will be using this space?
Theme: Is there a theme? Western, Log Cabin, Beachy, etc.
Examples:
A casual, calm environment will be created in the Dickerson household remodel. Upon entering the modern home, guests will feel comforted and free. As occupants move through the home they will be able to appreciate the Tibetan and Indian décor, allowing a feeling of comfort. The sleek addition will provide a breathtaking view of the wooded area on the north side of the home thanks to the new, open concept. A present dining area and separate work area have a very important function in this home. This area is going to accomplish a smooth, clean feel for the client.
This simple mid-century modern design will provide the family with a fun environment for a young, active family that strives to impress guests with a bold, adventurous home. Warmth and excitement will be immediate feelings tied to the inviting, informal Martin household. Trendy, unique touches throughout the home create a rich feeling and add a sense of playfulness through bold colors and statement pieces.
